Young Oceans is a collective of artists from New York City's Trinity Grace Church which originally came together to record an album that was geared toward a more meditative prayer setting. Their self-titled debut album was named Top 10 Album of the Year in 2012 by RELEVANT Magazine and with the release of additional albums in the years to follow, Young Oceans received requests for more adaptations of their music for use in the local church. Voices, Vol. 1 is a response to these requests and it contains some of their most loved favorites reworked with a more corporate sound featuring a number of notable guests artists including All Sons and Daughters, Evan Wickham and Leeland. The project's songwriter, Eric Marshall states, "I don’t claim for one second to have cracked the code on how to write songs for the Church to sing. Writers across the ages that have already provided enough songs to last a lifetime. This is just our small attempt at joining that great chorus and we hope it blesses you richly."
The songs on Voices, Vol. 1 all have a musical simplicity and atmosphere that paves the way for the vocals to shine through with great sincerity. Led by Bethel Music artist Leeland, "Come Holy One" captures a thirst for Jesus and a deep desire for His presence, "Come, come Holy One. Come meet us. All, all for Your glory, Lord Jesus." It offers up heartfelt surrender, declaring, "I am Yours, only Yours. We are Yours, only Yours." With the feel of a southern hymn, "Only You" emphasizes God's greatness as it approaches Him with humility and worship. It recognizes His authority over all and praises Him for His sovereignty and power, "Only You have set the earth on its foundation. Only You give orders to the dawn. Only You can know the depths of every ocean. Only You deserve our song." "Great Is Our God" is a beautiful anthem that is full of adoration for the Savior, testifying of all that He has done and inviting all to bow before Him and proclaim His greatness. It encourages us to live our lives in a state of constant worship as we eagerly anticipate His return, "And we will seek Him, Our Rock of Salvation. Morning by morning, with Thanksgiving we come. And we will bow down. With creation we cry out in daylight and darkness, we sing to the Lord. Great is our God!"
